Feel free to blame the phpBB team. They haven't fixed this issue in a year. The issue being vulnerability to automatically registering and posting spam bots.

I've invited the d16 guys to use some hacks on the phpbb forum.

phpbb3 should be more spam proof because you can add/remove custom required fields,hidden fields and there's a central spam detection software that matches a user or mail against a blacklist , a bit like what happens in askiment or open proxy detection with mail systems

phpBB 3 is still very far from being stable enough to be deployed in a normal production enviroment.
Plus I can't take phpBB seriously anymore. They refuse to implement a proper official captcha system and even though they're aware of the huge spam problem phpBB forums all over the world are facing, they don't care enough.
At the moment of posting, I notice a new friend joined the forum, "a-cialis-u". Typical.
