drumbox race between D16 and Audiorealism

Its interesting to see the discussions on fora about these 2 new boxes.

One thinks D16's doesn't match the 808 at all, another is complaining about the mid/high range being too pronounced and the sounds being too 'slim', another says that the ADM by audiorealism is too cheesy and fat..

But it's interesting that both match the 808 timbre very close. I always think if its coming down to things, you can change equalizing to make things you think are sounding too thin , beef it up with midlow or maximizers: It would be more important if the actual timbres were not sounding right.

For example i think the audiorealism's 808 cymbal lacks the typical swoosh that's in nepheton and in the 808 samples from the real 808 that are presented...

AudioRealism tells its 808 is 'laser gun free".. if that's a hint of critics, or if its meant to make it more 'authentic'.. I don't know...

Both have their pros and cons. Ofcourse it's too early for a n indepth review of the 2 because I'm not buying the ADM box anyway and i'm just talking about what I can determine from the page there...

Nepheton sounds astonishingly accurate to me. If folks base their expectations on how the 808 sounds from records or samples that have been processed and treated with that all-important compression (or slightly overdriven on their desk), they'll be disappointed that it doesn't actually sound as 'phat' as the legends state when raw.

It's also worth remembering that Audiorealism and D16's reference machines will sound different, as is the nature of analogue equipment. It's the character that is important, which Nepheton has nailed. From the audiorealism demos the toms and congas sound a bit off to me, but it's still very 808.

THe ADM sounds a bit creamy to me, that doesnt mean 'not right' it just means, very strong and kind of brute force in the middle... this is good for electronica music

but ofcoruse we all know in balads we would want a bit of a clean ish snare and all..

but once again this is hardly a shortcoming o a plugin, but a matter of mixing

UPDATED v5

on the adm site: http://audiorealism.se/adm/adm_announcement.htm

scroll down to:
Pattern comparsion 2

compare:
808: http://www.audiorealism.se/adm/808comp2.mp3
ADM: http://www.audiorealism.se/adm/admcomp2.mp3
my go with the nepheton: http://globalgoon.com/nepheton_comp2_v5.wav

i couldn't get the hihats quite right, but everything else is pretty close

it could be tweaked even further to sound a lot closer. (maybe someone else can have a go) - th relative levels of the drums aren't right.
the adm version of that 808 pattern sounds quite a way off to my ears
although i do like the sound of their machine!

The BPM was 102.08

I'm not sure but its as if the snare noise of the ADM has a cutoff filter or is a bit less "clear" than the nepheton one, you clearly hear that one produce noise and has a thin release envelope at the end without loosing high frequency...

ofcourse you can adjust the snappy but its not the same as with the adm

The hihats of nepheton have to much resonance to me, sound to harsh.

Well, I made some A/B test at a mate's studio the other day, and I have to say that comparing ADM to Drumazon/Nepheton is like comparing apples with oranges.

The ADM is not an 'emulation' as such IMO: The sound sources have a lot to do with 909/808, but there's barely any controls for the sounds (the 'decay' parameter on the kik module, for example, just sucks - not nearly enough range).

I'd say that if you want to compare ADM & D16 drum machines in terms of "which comes closer to the real kikumoto jewels", D16 wins both hands down easily!

Now if you consider ADM as "a nice user-PCM-friendly beatbox ala reason's redrum", it's not a bad machine at all. Like people stated, it has a sound of its own (quite a good one at that too) But not much to do with emulating a 808 or a 909, I'm afraid.

This was why I chose D16 - I'd rather have the (proven) kikumoto sound instead of a generic 808/909ish synth drum sound.

ADM works as AU and as AU MultiOutput. End of story. D16 lost the Mac game.

You're just being impatient. It's just a matter of time before we'll have drumazon & nepheton in AU land, and when we do, ADM has lost again! ;)

I just have to add: I love both the ADM and nepheton, I use both regularly

So... Here it is almost 2009. Happy New Year.

Are we still being impatient with proper AU support? How about proper VST support on the Mac? Still doesn't work with a wrapper, RTAS or AU...

I think it's safe to say those of us who bought the plugs based on the advertisements can be a little annoyed at this point. More than disappointed.

Sorry, but there is no reason to make excuses at this point for d16. No one is being impatient when the wait has been this long.
