Redopter 2 - lots of gain when 'initialized', why?

Even when totally "INIT"-ialized, Redopter still gives lots of gain to input -- why?
I set everything to zero, with the intent of creating an INIT that has 'no effect' until I dial something in. And yet, there's (slight) distortion and LOTS of gain increase happening on the signal, even with these settings?
Is this expected behavior? With nothing happening it's supposed to create a lot of gain? Seems weird to me...
