Well it's not nearly as complex as a Sherman Filterbank. Also, Filterbank also happens to be an analog device, so the combination of complexity + analog components + knobs, materials, etc, results in lots of $ to produce, ship, and hence buy.
Devastor has excellent, unique sound and allows very broad sound shaping possibilities with ease, and I commend D16 for the price. I think it's very fair and affordable, and other companies should take an example. Quality doesn't have to cost tons of money.
