FX? sacrilege!

that would miss the entire point. it's easy to mask crap synthesis w/ FX. the idea here is to present the 808 as it sounds. last time i checked mine, there are no onboard FX... once you buy it, you can swamp it w/ as many FX as you'd like... until then, D16 knows what they're doing: giving us an unbiased, true demonstration of what the unit sounds like, pure and raw.

my 2 cents...

I agree with intrepidtraveller that adding fx would miss the point. You can add fx in any proper host as much as you want.

However, I also see Momir's point. Much like for the Phoscyon, I would make one exception to the 'no fx rule' for a good gain / overdrive / distortion type of 'effect'; tube saturation also falls in this category.

Since these machines (303, 909, 808) are electronic instruments, they don't really have a 'pure' sound; how they sound depends on the an amp / speaker system, how 'loud' you feed its signal into that system, and how that system handles that signal at a particular level. When if I plug a cable from a 808 output into a microphone input on a mixing desk, it sounds different from a 808 plugged into a line level input on the same mixing desk.

And because I don't mind and actually really appreciate a good distortion in the 1-channel Phoscyon, I feel the case is even stronger for a 11 or 17 channel VSTi. Of course I can insert 11 or 17 separate distortion fx in a VST host (and yes I do / will!), but in many ways (e.g. better overview, eliminating redundancy, saving processor cycles) it would be more efficient not to have to do so, but to have this integrated in the VSTi itself. Also, I really like the distortion in Phoscyon. So at least until that is available as a separate plug-in I am in favour of adding such an effect.

So that makes 4 cents total... :)
