low noise in 808 kick question...

OK, based on the demo's there have been lots of oppinions on the upcoming nepethon. SOme find it good, others find it too thin compared to the real 808 sound. However I'm inclined to think it's the best emulator , but maybe with a comment about one detail.

what I actually "can" understand is that original tr 808's had this low noise in their kicks when you tweak the decay/tone, which the demo's don't seem to have.. it's good that they posted a movie to illustrate this:

will this be approximated in nepethon ?

Hi there,

Original tr-808 has not such noise in the Base Drum. The guy, who made this movie simply passed the BD output thru reverb FX and You can hear just a result of it.

Best regards,
Sebastian

i was not sure of it really, but i really was confused as to why he would only do that on the kick :). That wouldn't be the brightest choise to convince me that it's deeper, but maybe more dirty and "analog" yes.

Having heard milion kind of 808 flavoured samples, but never really had first hand experience wiht a box, other than the timbres and characteristics I had no frame of refference, and i thought it was just a feature of one of the bassdrum knobs and cause of the "youtube sound quality", i was confused between "noise" or "reverb"

so.. well i was wrong :)..

Is there going to be some "exhanced" tuning of 808 instruments otherwise ? (like with drumazon)

Ofcourse... as You can see at Nepheton's GUI :)

Should it be a question of serial number, as usrfobiwan mentionned it for the TR909 ?
Heres's the link (it's in the Private Area... )

I can put here the schematics of 808's BassDrum, but i think it's not the solution :)
One thing i can say is that there is no noise passing by bass drum circuit at schematics and our 808 too :)

I was just talking about differences between 808 series, not especially about noise.
It's known for example, that Jeff Mills' 808 is naturally groovin' better than the others... :D :D :D

It's always interesting to have insides of people who owned the real deal (which I didn't, otherwise I could be more sure too).

I ofcourse believe it when you say it's not in there, cause almost in no sampled kits you can hear it (except for that movie really)...

I love drumazon to bits. For me it's "the ultimate 909 i ever heard" (which doesn't mean that I own the real 909 as well, but I base myself on the many house tracks sample kits and other occurances of 909 I have heard).

That's a satisfaction enough for me.

I mean the different serial numbers, but you have to read the entire post to understand!

Oh... maybe you were just jokin'?

Well there are differences in pcb layout and components used on the TR-909. There are a lot of T9's without any markings on the pcb at all. So later modifacations are real hard to do. In the later serial ranges, pcb use the known white markings of different component locations on the pcb. But there are also condensor and transistor brand differences acros the range of serial numbers. (read: cheaper components brands)

I do not own a 808 so i do not know the ins and outs about that one. But i strongly believe there are differences in pcb designs and/or components that are used along the 'serialnumber' ranges just like the T9. You must not forget that most of the early models Roland made where sort of prototypes. (hence not numbering the pcbs and ugly soldering jobs on the early models)

In the 80's they would probably made 20 or 30 from a new product and if they would sell good, then made a productionline for it. And the production lines where not fully automated like they do now. Back then it was very costly to build such a product compared to nowadays. So if they would have made 10.000 units back then and the product would net sell it would be very expensive!
