[DR] Snaredrum punchier/more attack ?

Hey guys, just installed the purchased drumazon and tweaked it real hardcore with various parametric EQ's and different distortion fx. Great!

The only thing i think is lacking is a harder attack/punch of the snaredrum, compared to a real 909 (i own a tr 909 since 1998). I really would like that, or else the sd won't stay punchy when distorting it and i would have to use a sample ..... and that's not the reason i bought drumazon of course

Does the d16 crew know if this will be changed in the near future ?

Are You sure that Yours samples are'nt compressed?

Hi Niel909,

I've been using the drumazon also for my hardcore music and am also an owner of the original 909.
I was suprised about the drumazons sound and use it a lot now.
Indeed compression is the key to a punchier/more snappy sd, i would say experiment with compression.
Dont know if you own a uad card but the 1176 compressor is for me the key to success. Of course others can do just fine for you.

I think and i preffer to use machines/vsti's that have their basics covered.
Since the drumazon is a vst representation of the analog TR 909, i think that the drumazon shoud have the same basic sound which stays the same like when you are using a TR909. I've never had to use compression with my TR909 sd's in my records to get the sound i wanted.

For now, that would mean i have to use a compressor on the sd everytime i use the drumazon, just to have my basic sound. Only some EQ and distortion should be enough.
Some other hardcore house producers think the same (synthforum.nl)
I'll make some (distortion) audio previews of what I mean, for comparison.

Here is a wavefile of the Drumazon vs the TR 909 snaredrums I made today. No effects, no limiting or compression. Only normalized.

uncompressed 16 bit 44.1 mono, 2mb

I used the same EQ for all recordings and used gaindistortion on a Yamaha MG12/4 mixer.
The soundfile contains of 4 parts:
1. Drumazon, EQ without gain distortion
2. TR909, EQ without gain distortion
3. Drumazon, EQ and gain distortion
4. TR909, EQ and gain distortion

*WARNING* the distorted pieces in the second half are much louder, so keep the volume down when playing the whole sample.

was just a tip

use things you think you can use best, i will not sell my TR neither, will use both real and plug.
and always test proper before you buy

For me the drumazon is a very versatile and usefull plug with similar shaping/creating possibilities as the real thing without claiming its 100% identical.

At the end its all about the sound you want to create, how and what will do the trick is up to you of course.

But I know my way around the studio fortunately.

The choice to use a drumazon as a replacement for a 909 for being the basic drum sound provider should also be workable in practise so not all is up to the creator (artist/producer) of the sound in my opinion.
Nevertheless, I still think D16 did some great work with the vsti's here, that's why I bought the stuff, as a support. The only flipside is that people (like me) after paying for a product can be such perfectionists that we give our uncensored feedback and hope that in the near future our requests can be added in (near) future updates. It would sure make me an even happier person

I don't think wanting better sound from the product is being a perfectionist

. I hope they'll continue to improve the snare drum as well as the other sounds.

yeah, you're right. But I thought I would bring it nicely instead of "demanding" better snares

More to ask, when distorting the snaredrum and making a 16th pattern with a volume upcoming snare before a climax thye snaredrum cuts of hard at the end like a gate effect, only with low velocityvalues.

I checked it and You're right, but it wansn't exactly synthesis bug. When 909 sends individual instruments to the external separate output - the sound is "shaped" additionally. I've implemented this effect in new sources - just wait for upcoming update of Drumazon (it is implemented already in DR AU).
