ADSR Release not working via MIDI

Postby computer controlled » Tue Oct 30, 2012 11:18 am

I'm noticing that when i use my Alpha Juno to play LuSH, the Release parameter doesn't work. It works when using the virtual keyboard, or when sequencing in Ableton. Just not when being played via external MIDI. Anyone else run into this?

Hi,

Do you mean the hold pedal (MIDI CC64)?

Best regards,
Sebastian

No, not the hold pedal. Just when playing an external MIDI keyboard. It's like the VCA is gated, no matter what setting i have it on. Weird.

Hi,

Did you try to mess with Trig, Gate settings in Envelopes?

Did you try some other MIDI keyboard controller, does the Alpha Juno send MIDI note off events?

Thank you,

Best regards,
Sebastian

I tried it with my Minibrute as a controller and it works. So the Juno must not be sending Note Off info for some weird reason. Very strange.

Hi,

Roland Alpha Juno was designed in 1986 and MIDI specification had been developing until 1996. I realize that Note off message is one of the basics for MIDI specification, but who knows what hardware developers had in their mind back then :)

Best regards,

Apparently the way the Note Off in the Juno works is it's a Note On with a velocity of 0. So there's some kind of incompatibility issue between LuSH and this way of doing note offs. Just thought i'd let you know in case this isn't the type of note off message you might be familiar with when programming.

Hi,

MIDI specification was made for a purpose, which is to make hardware developers to fit in to that standard. And that standard is restrictively respected by all hardware and software developers nowdays. Note Off is the MIDI event that's supposed to disable note, not the Note On with velocity 0. All currently available master keyboards send MIDI Note Off message in order to reflect releasing key. Also same principle applies to music software (like Cubase or Live) where notes are stored as MIDI events, and events are send to the plug-in when you want a MIDI track to be played by a plug-in. I'm sorry, but we're not going to bend the VST/AU and MIDI specifications because an outdated keyboard does not hold the MIDI standard properly. Accordingly to MIDI standard Note ON with velocity 0 correspond to MIDI key pushed with extremely low velocity.

Best regards,
Sebastian
